Yogurt Parfait - The Perfect Workout Food?

Lauren had suggested that I find something other than muscle milk and clif bars to fuel with pre-workout. Apparently triathletes have a nasty habit of getting sick of "energy food" and just want something real. To prevent that burn out she wants me to eat fruits with protein as often as I can to substitute for all the protein based health products. My main reason for eating Clif bars and protein shakes is convenience and my laziness. Then I found it - the holy grail of healthy food:

At 340 calories, 67 grams of carbs and 11 grams of protein the Starbucks yogurt parfait gives me the absolute perfect mix for my pre workout food. At $3.45 a pop they aren't cheap but then again that's only a dollar more than the 2 clif bars I normally need cost me. I'm partial to the Strawberry Banana one. I'm not a huge fan of the megalopolis that Starbucks has become but I have to admit they are producing one heck of a tasty product!

Yesterday's workout - an hour recovery ride on my bike trainer; kept the cadence above 90 the entire time! Starting bs was 230 (went a little crazy with the yogurt parfait) ending bs was a steady 120!

Now we're talking - that's something that could inspire even me to get up in the morning and run! Though I may eat just half, as 67g's would put me sky-high!

Starbucks is robbing you blind.

You don't even have to cook it!

You can't be so lazy that you can't make it yourself and save a nice chunk of money ;)

Hey - thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting.

I LOVE those parfaits. Whenever I'm traveling on business, I make sure to get one every day for breakfast, since they're pretty healthy, and I can write off the cost! It's a perfect combination.

Keep in touch.

McDonalds has a fruit and yogurt parfait too. But I don't think it has that many carbs in it. I love them. But then, we don't have a Starbucks here, so I have never tried one from Starbucks.

Wingman -
First let me say "Welcome to the club!" - As in Diabetes. Don't let the Big D get the best of you and always remember to laugh...it helps a lot!

Second - I like your blog and have to say that you've got me motivated. I was walking 20 miles a week and then got side tracked with an inflamation of the metatarsal pad in October. Hope to start heavy cardio again in January. For now I swim.

Thirdly - You should join DESA - The Diabetes, Exercise, & Sports Association. They are a fantastic group of diabetic athletes and I know they have a NYC chapter. This years International Meeting is in Toronto.

4th - the parfait looks pretty damn tasty! Whole Foods makes a pretty delicious one as well.

I'm new to the blog world and started my own Diabetes blog in November. I've met some great folks and have come across some wonderfully cool sites.

Hope you did well in your race and have great holiday!

WOW! This is like a Saturday Night Live parody from the early days of SNL when they did fake commercials like Colon Blow and Bass O'matic. I'd laugh if it weren't so tragic...

BG reading of 230 dropping to 120 is a one way ticket to degenerative disease. You folks should check out Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. Easy read. He is in his 70's I think, Type 1 since childhood, works out like a demon and keeps his BG at all times below 100 and nice and even. Goes to medical conferences and goes out running in the morning with other docs and leaves them all in the dust...

Why the heck would any diabetic eat something like this? 230!? and 120 you consider good? Yikes! damage starts at 140.....
